Federal and state health officials were trying to figure out how intravenous feeding bags became contaminated with bacteria after nine critically ill patients died and 10 others were sickened at Alabama hospitals after being treated with the commonly used solutions.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Health officials on Tuesday would not directly link the deaths to the outbreak of serratia marcescens bacteria at six hospitals, but the bags were pulled off the market.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
"There is nothing to suggest the deaths were directly related to the bacterial infection," said State Health Officer Donald Williamson who declined to give details on the patients including their ages and illnesses.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
On March 16, two hospitals reported increased cases of serratia marcescens to the Alabama Department of Public Health. Officials linked the infection to TPN, a common nutritional supplement delivered directly from the plastic bags into the bloodstream through IV tubes.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
A single pharmacy, Birmingham-based Meds IV, made the bags. Williamson said the company has notified its customers of the contamination, has discontinued production and was being very cooperative.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
"We wouldn't be nearly as far along as we are without them," said Williamson.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Calls to Meds IV and its owner seeking comment were not returned.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Meds IV is registered to Edward Cingoranelli, who appears to have been involved in at least three other medical supply companies, according to the Alabama Secretary of State's office. Meds IV was incorporated two weeks after one of the other firms.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
When Select Specialty Hospital in Birmingham learned one of its suppliers may have distributed bags containing the bacteria, it started investigating and stopped using Meds IV products, said the hospital's chief executive officer. Other hospitals also immediately stopped using the products.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
"We are committed to high-quality patient care and are fully cooperating with government officials in their ongoing investigation of the supplier," Jeffrey Denney said.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Hospitals have very strict infection control for TPN. The supplement compound of several different nutrients, including electrolytes, is delivered daily in bags that are pre-mixed, not done in the hospital. The supplement is administered into a central line intravenously, going directly into the patients' blood stream. Patients are monitored carefully for symptoms of septic shock.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Serratia marcescens bacteria grow in moist areas and can settle in hospital patients' respiratory and urinary tracts. The bacteria is common and easily treatable if detected early. Patients with serratia sepsis may have fever, chills, shock, and respiratory distress.&lt;br /&gt;

Besides Select Specialty, other hospitals hit with the outbreak were Baptist Princeton, Baptist Shelby, Medical West and Cooper Green in the Birmingham area and Baptist Prattville, north of Montgomery.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The state health department, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, and the Food and Drug Administration are investigating.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Williamson said the risk of more patients being exposed to the bacteria has ended.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
"There are no outstanding cases of this infection. It is contained and closed," Williamson said.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;

"The only reason I don't have an exact figure is because my scale stopped at 280 pounds," he said. "I had to kind of guess at that point."&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The weight, on his 5-foot-11-inch frame, posed dangerous health risks and made daily life difficult and sometimes embarrassing. He recalled a humiliating meeting that made him realize his weight was a problem."[The staff] all stood like they typically do and I went to my chair at the head of the table, and as I sat down the chair collapsed," he said. "I dusted myself off and got up and tried to make light of it and said that they just don't make chairs like they used to. But it wasn't the chair that needed rebuilding, it was me."&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The epiphany, however, arrived when he was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in 2003. Huckabee's doctor told him that without a lifestyle change he had about 10 years to live.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
"It was a real wake-up call," Huckabee said.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Over the past two years he's lost about 120 pounds, embarked on a crusade against fat and has become something of a national example of the growing threat of obesity -- and a success story for battling it.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
An estimated two of every three American adults, and more than one in six children and adolescents are considered overweight or obese, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The rates have been on the rise since the late 1980s after being relatively constant in the '60s and '70s, said Dr. Cynthia Ogden, an epidemiologist at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The percentage of adults who are obese -- defined as having a Body Mass Index of 30 or more -- has doubled to 31 percent, or some 60 million people, over the past two decades, Ogden said. (What's your BMI?)&lt;br /&gt;

Some critics are skeptical of the NIH study's methodology and argue that medical progress could increase longevity, but many generally agree that obesity does pose a legitimate threat to American society.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;

It’s                    when we start comparing ourselves to the                    guys or gals in the magazines that we get                    into trouble, and get lost in that vicious                    cycle of hype and sensationalism all too                    prevalent in &lt;a href="http://25efcqma6d4y0r5l21vb5cpf-o.hop.clickbank.net/" target="_top"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial;"&gt;fitness and fat burning                    today.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial;"&gt;&lt;/a&gt;

You’re a busy person.  We all                    are. It’s not                    easy. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;                  &lt;p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%;" align="left"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial;"&gt;Then                    comes along the fitness gurus telling you                    that to burn fat and get in great shape                    you’ve got to workout everyday or close to                    it.  You’ve got to do &lt;a href="http://25efcqma6d4y0r5l21vb5cpf-o.hop.clickbank.net/" target="_top"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial;"&gt;aerobics or                    cardiovascular exercise&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial;"&gt; &lt;/a&gt;  to burn fat, several                    times a week.  You’ve got to weight                    train several other days each week, so that                    you are literally working out 5-6 days each                    week, every week. On                    top of that, when their programs don’t                    deliver, they’ll tell you that everyone is                    different and that you’ve got to find what                    works right for you.  Wait a                    minute...weren’t they just telling you that                    their program promises the body on the                    cover?&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;                  &lt;p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%;" align="left"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial;"&gt;What                    they are doing is keeping you in that                    fitness insanity that I mentioned                    earlier.  They keep you doing the same                    thing (trying then next hot product or                    workout and diet regimen) and promising the                    same great fat burning results.  If it                    doesn’t work, they recommend the next great                    thing.  And too many people go on to                    that next miracle product or promise and the                    fitness industry uses this to their                    advantage!&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;                  &lt;p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%;" align="left"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial;"&gt;Unfortunately                    the fitness industry, in many ways, has                    become a cycle of hype and                    sensationalism.  Sure, there are some                    &lt;a href="http://25efcqma6d4y0r5l21vb5cpf-o.hop.clickbank.net/" target="_top"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial;"&gt;good-hearted trainers and professionals&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial;"&gt;&lt;/a&gt;  out                    there, but even some of them are being                    controlled by the fitness center owners,                    magazine publishers, and supplement                    companies.  That’s where the money                    is!  Even if they are trying to help                    you, they can become unwitting victims to                    the machine. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;                  &lt;p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%;" align="left"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial;"&gt;They                    advertise their products, programs, and                    diets by using the cream of the crop in the                    genetic gene pool.  Hey, if it worked                    for that guy or gal with the amazing                    physique, it will work for me.  I fell                    for it, too, many times, until I did some                    serious research and experimentation as I                    mentioned before. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;                  &lt;p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%;" align="left"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial;"&gt;Then                    one day I finally woke up and discovered for                    myself the secrets that few people are aware                    of.  Secrets that will never dominate                    the fitness industry’s general                    recommendations because they are unpopular                    with the people that control the                    industry.  Why?&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;                  &lt;p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%;" align="left"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial;"&gt;Because                    these principles won’t sell loads of crazy                    exercise gimmicks, gadgets, or magic                    potions. It                    was hard to watch.
               
                I’d ask them how their fat burning plan was                 working and they’d tell me that it seemed                 pretty good at first, but they didn’t get the                 results they were expecting or they felt were                 promised.  They quickly became tired of                 following the daily workouts and found                 following the strict eating guidelines almost                 maddening at times. &lt;a href="http://25efcqma6d4y0r5l21vb5cpf-o.hop.clickbank.net/" target="_top"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial;"&gt;So they hopped onto                 the next plan.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial;"&gt;&lt;/a&gt; 
&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;                  &lt;p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%;" align="left"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial;"&gt;Even                    worse, they became so frustrated with                    following these so-called exercise gurus’                    programs, that they fell even deeper into                    unhealthy eating habits once they stopped                    the program.  Binging became their only                    form of satisfaction. &lt;a href="http://25efcqma6d4y0r5l21vb5cpf-o.hop.clickbank.net/" target="_top"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial;"&gt;Forget about                    maximum fat burning&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial;"&gt;&lt;/a&gt; , and talk about moving                    in the wrong direction.
               
                What’s worse is that all of these people were                 following the typically recommended exercise                 and fad diets that were all the rage.                  They were doing what everyone else was doing to                 burn fat fast.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;                  &lt;p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%;" align="left"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial;"&gt;After                    speaking with many of these friends and                    inquiring about their exercise routines, I                    noticed one common theme that kept popping                    up in our discussions…they were focused on                    the short term…their approach was                    wrong. We all want to                    achieve what we know in our hearts we’re                    capable of so badly, and that’s why we’re                    such easy prey to this “get fit quick”                    mentality.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;                  &lt;p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%;" align="left"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial;"&gt;Most                    people are approaching health and fitness in                    the exact opposite way that they should be,                    and they're not going to burn fat because of                    it.  If you continually think of using                    exercise and nutrition as ways to lose a                    couple of pounds, or get in shape for                    summer, you're going to be disappointed with                    your results.
               
                If you think of exercise,&lt;a href="http://25efcqma6d4y0r5l21vb5cpf-o.hop.clickbank.net/" target="_top"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial;"&gt;nutrition, and rest                 as separate things&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial;"&gt;&lt;/a&gt; , you're going to be                 disappointed with your fat burning and fitness                 results. But recent studies have                    shown that this is a big, I mean big                    mistake.  In fact, you could say that                    the whole aerobics explosion of a few                    decades past was one of the&lt;a href="http://25efcqma6d4y0r5l21vb5cpf-o.hop.clickbank.net/" target="_top"&gt; &lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial;"&gt;biggest mistakes&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial;"&gt; &lt;/a&gt;                      in the health and fitness industry.                     Why?&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;                  &lt;p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%;" align="left"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial;"&gt;There                    are several reasons, but I’ll focus on the                    two main issues here.  When you                    exercise at a moderate pace for extended                    periods of time (as in the typically                    recommended percent of your target heart                    rate), your body is burning fat during the                    exercise.  While this may sound good,                    it’s&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial;"&gt;  &lt;a href="http://25efcqma6d4y0r5l21vb5cpf-o.hop.clickbank.net/" target="_top"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial;"&gt;actually bad news.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial;"&gt; &lt;/a&gt; 
&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;                  &lt;p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%;" align="left"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial;"&gt;This                    sends a signal to your body to keep a                    certain amount of stored fat available for                    your next workout.  You’re essentially                    telling it that it needs fat available to                    burn, ‘because you’ll be doing this exercise                    again.  So while we may be burning some                    calories during this exercise, after the                    exercise is over, our body begins storing up                    some fat for the next workout.                     Obviously not what we’re looking for in                    terms of &lt;a href="http://25efcqma6d4y0r5l21vb5cpf-o.hop.clickbank.net/" target="_top"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial;"&gt;maximum ability to burn fat                    fast&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial;"&gt; &lt;/a&gt; .&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%;" align="left"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial;"&gt;The                    other big concern with moderately paced                    aerobic exercise performed several times per                    week is that it trains your body (heart,                    lungs, muscles, etc.) to become                    efficient.  Again, this may sound good,                    but what is actually happening is bad for                    long term health.  You are working only                    within your existing aerobic limits, without                    improving your aerobic                    capacity. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;                  &lt;p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%;" align="left"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial;"&gt;This                    is important because your aerobic capacity                    is what determines how your body responds in                    times of physical, emotional, and mental                    stress.  If you reduce your capacity                    for work, as you do in this type of                    exercise, you’re reducing your long term                    health, no to mention a poor chance of                    burning fat.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;                  &lt;p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%;" align="left"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial;"&gt;The                    good news is, you can reverse these effects                    by instead focusing your workouts on high                    intensity resistance training, with workouts                    that last 15-20 minutes on average, and can                    only be performed 2-3 times per                    week.
&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;a href="http://25efcqma6d4y0r5l21vb5cpf-o.hop.clickbank.net/" target="_top"&gt;Click Here!&lt;/a&gt;&lt;p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%;" align="left"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial;"&gt;These                    workouts will burn carbohydrates instead of                    fat during the workout, and will cause your                    body to use its fat stores to replenish the                    burned carbs over the next 24 hours, after                    the workout is done!  This type of work                    will also increase your reserve capacity and                    thus your ability to handle all types of                    stress, leading to lasting health and                    fitness...and 24/7 fat burning.                     Nice!&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;                  &lt;p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%;" align="left"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial;"&gt;But                    the exercise must be performed correctly to                    be effective, and that means using                    sufficient intensity, and keeping your rest                    periods between exercises and sets down to                    60 seconds or less.  &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;                  &lt;p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%;" align="left"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial;"&gt;The                    students of my &lt;a href="http://25efcqma6d4y0r5l21vb5cpf-o.hop.clickbank.net/" target="_top"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial;"&gt;Fat Burning Furnace method&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial;"&gt;&lt;/a&gt; knows  &lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial;"&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial;"&gt;this, and are reaping the                    benefits. Trends show that more consumers are buying organic more frequently because of concerns about health, pesticide exposure, and the environment. The bottom line for health is still to eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, whether organic or not.    But when you stroll into the produce section, do you ever wonder which organic fruits and vegetables you should be buying? Since organic foods are often more expensive, it's important to know what to look for, so you don't end up paying extra for organic fruits and veggies that are pretty clean, even in their non-organic versions. 

One useful source for this information is the Environmental Working Group. Its Web site lists 44 fruits and vegetables ranked by the amount of pesticide residue each contains. Knowing which fruits and vegetables are usually carrying the most pesticides and which are cleanest, you can decide when it would be wisest to buy organic. 

The EWG's "dirty dozen" are peaches, apples, sweet bell peppers, celery, nectarines, strawberries, cherries, lettuce, grapes (imported), pears, spinach, and potatoes. The "cleanest 12" are onions, avocados, sweet corn (frozen), pineapples, mangos, sweet peas (frozen), asparagus, kiwis, bananas, cabbage, broccoli, and eggplants. 

Think especially about buying organic when you're choosing one of the "dirty dozen." And, once you're home, your best bet is to wash all produce, even the organic ones, in warm water before preparing them. Firm produce can be scrubbed with a vegetable brush; softer, riper produce can be washed with a sink sprayer — or use one of those special washing products designed just for produce. 

Peeling fruits and vegetables does reduce pesticide exposure, of course, but peeling also removes some important nutrients found in the peel, such as fiber.  My advice: If you're going to spend the extra money for organic foods, spend it on organic produce, not on organic snacks and sweets. Once you get these little things mastered you'll find that burning fat and losing weight comes a whole lot easier than you'd ever imagine.

I want to get something clear, by the end of this article you're not going to be a fat burning machine. You won't instantly, magically lose weight. But hopefully you'll pick up a few little tips that you can incorporate into your life, to help you get on the fast track to a healthier, fitter body.

1 - Don't let your tea and coffee ruin your body! On their own tea and coffee are more or less harmless (except for a few nasties in coffee) and won't make you put on weight. But, it's the nasties that you add that make the difference; it's the full fat milk, the cream or the sugar that pile on the calories. And these are hidden calories, because you barely notice you're consuming them. A cup of coffee with cream and two sugars can quickly add a few hundred extra calories to your diet.

2 - You'll hate me for saying this, but you really do need to count the calories as you eat them. If you are really serious about losing weight, you must track everything you put in your mouth. Remember your body is a machine, you must feed it the right fuel, and the right amount of fuel. Get a list of the calorie content of common foods, read the labels and speak to a nutritionist if necessary.

3 - Overindulged? If you've eaten too much, or had a bad binge day, you've got to make up for it, and I don't mean by starving yourself the next day. You've got to work off the calories by doing exercise, and extra exercise if you've overeaten.

4 - Beware of fried foods! If it's fried, it's going to be fatty. If you're on weight loss, fat burning mission, then fried foods are your #1 enemy. You must duck, dive and evade all things fried. The oil or fat the food is fried in, is stuffed with more calories than you'd imagine, even when excess oil is drained away, the residual oil calorie content is astronomical. Run away, far away, from any fried foods.

5 - Skip meals at your peril! This is one of the critical mistakes many people who try to lose weight make. You need at least 3 regular meals a day, if your are training seriously, top athletes will split this into 6 small meals throughout the day. This keeps hunger at bay longer and keeps your metabolism charging at full throttle. Skipping meals causes your metabolism to slow, you burn less fat, and food that you do eat is stored as fat, as your body goes into survival mode in case it's not fed again for another day. You MUST eat consistently and regularly.

6 - Eat all the fresh vegetables you can get your hands on. If you've got a choice and the cash, always go for fresh vegetables over canned or cooked, raw and fresh are better. When you cook them up, you lose lots of the vitamins and goodness in the process. If you're boiling them, save the water and use as gravy or stock to make the most of the goodness that's in the water. Canned vegetables are processed which means they too lose a lot of their goodness. If you can't get fresh, get frozen; the freezing process locks in the nutrients providing they've been frozen quickly after harvesting.

Burning fat and losing weight doesn't need to be difficult, you just need to be consistent with everything you do - eat the right foods and exercise regularly. This is a common mistake. Many people decide in a moment of desperation to follow a super strict diet and fail. Don't rush into a diet that may be too strict for you. If you don't have any dieting experience and are not 100 percent sure you can stick with the diet, then choose something else.

2. Don't lose touch with reality.
You can't realistically expect things to happen over night. When choosing your goal, start small, but be prepared to go far. If you hear someone saying that he lost a large number of pounds in a short time, don't make it your goal to match his performance. Diet results are different from one person to another.

3. Don't go to the gym too often
Another common mistake is to use the enthusiasm of the first days to hit the gym every day. This won't help you at all. 10. Don't rely on your willpower alone.
